Oblate Day - September

Over 60 people, Oblates and family members and other guests, came to the Archabbey for our 26th annual Oblate Day. Archabbot Douglas celebrated Mass at 10:30 A.M. for the group and offered the Mass in particular for deceased Oblate Nadeem Feroze of Pakistan. After Midday Prayer, lunch, and some free time for a tour, shopping, or prayer, Oblation ceremonies were held in the basilica at 1:45, during which Fr. Donald received the following:

Michele (Mary) Bloch
Craig A. (Joseph) Gilbert
Terri Helfer
Lora Anne (Egbert) Jacob
Andrei (Michael) Sergueev

Oblate novices:

Blaze Bingham
Carol J Haile
Gabriel S. Pellathy
Elizabeth “Betty” Wass

Gabriel is a retired professor of political science at St. Vincent College and continues to teach one course each semester. Blaze is the brother of Oblate Xavier Bingham. After confessions in the basilica, there was a social in the Parish Assembly Room. Then at 3:45 Fr. Jacques Daley, O.S.B., gave a presentation on humility, with references to the Rule and the teaching of St. Thérèse. The key to the spiritual life, he said, is to accept
God’s will and to do it with love. Thus we learn to look at other people, even those whom we don’t especially like, through the eyes of Christ. We learn to say, as Blessed Mother Teresa said, “Do what You will with me without consulting me!” God’s will for us includes working on our attachments, about which we learn when we lose our peace. God uses all things to draw us into intimacy with Christ.

We grow in this intimacy by falling in love with Christ and learning to love what He gives us.
Then the Oblates joined the monastic community for Vespers. The day’s events ended with supper and the singing of the Benedictine “Ultima.”
